ADVISORY ON SOCIAL MEDIA LOAN SCAMS
- Hits: 127
The Philippine Embassy in Rome recently received reports from Filipino nationals who have been victimized by a scam involving fake loan offers on social media. The scammers posted ads promising quick loans, and lured victims by providing photos of licensed Philippine companies, permits, and personal IDs. Victims were instructed to pay a 10% "security bond" upfront, and were told that this would be refunded once the loan has been processed. However, after payment, the scammer would claim that errors occurred, and demand additional payments under threat of bad credit and accusations of tax evasion if they decided to cancel the transaction.
Due to these disturbing developments, the Embassy urges the public to always be vigilant and cautious of offers that require upfront payment for loans. Legitimate financial institutions will never ask for payment before granting a loan. If you are ever in doubt, verify the company’s legitimacy with authorities such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
If you encounter such a scam, do not send money and make a formal report of the incident to the Cybercrime Division of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) or the Anti-Cybercime Group of the Philippine National Police by sending the affidavit executed in the nearest Philippine Embassy/Consulate in your area.
