09 January 2018 ROME — Philippine Ambassador to Italy, Domingo P. Nolasco, administered the oath of office to Mr. Francesco Mortelliti, the newly appointed honorary consul of the Philippines in Reggio Calabria on January 05 at the Philippine Embassy in Rome.
As honorary consul of the Philippines, Mr. Mortelitti’s area of jurisdiction covers province of Reggio Calabria in southern Italy and the city of Messina in the eastern coast of the island of Sicily. An estimated 1,000 Filipinos reside within his area of jurisdiction.
Following his oath of office, Mr. Mortelliti, a lawyer by profession, received a briefing on Philippine consular policies, functions and practices from Ambassador Nolasco. He will commence office operations immediately after he has completed the administrative requirements of his office, including the training of his staff.
Ambassador Nolasco says the appointment of Mr. Mortelitti re-establishes the presence of the Philippine government in Reggio Calabria and its neighboring provinces, brings the consular services of the Philippine Embassy closer to Filipino community in the area and provides an opportunity for its economic diplomacy program to expand.
Mr. Mortelliti is the seventh Philippine honorary consul in Italy. The Philippines maintains other honorary consulates in Palermo, Cagliari, and Napoli covering the southern regions and island provinces of Italy, Florence for its central regions, and Turin and Venezia for its northern regions.
Italy is home to almost 170,000 Filipinos, making the country the top country destination of Filipinos in the European Union. END
