Rome Magna Carta 1

20 March 2017 ROME – More than 30 Filipina migrant workers in Rome attended a forum on the Magna Carta of Women at the Embassy’s multi-purpose hall. The Philippine Embassy in Rome organized the forum as part of its celebration of women’s month with the theme, “WE Make Change Work for Women.”

Philippine Ambassador to Italy Domingo P. Nolasco explained the significance and the key provisions of the Magna Carta of Women, a comprehensive women’s human rights law that seeks to eliminate discrimination against women especially those in the marginalized sectors.

The Ambassador emphasized that while the Philippines is one of the most advanced countries in the promotion of gender equality, there is still a lot to be done to reduce the gender gap between women and men in the country.

Noting that majority of migrant workers in Italy are women, Ambassador Nolasco encouraged women migrant workers in Italy to know about their women’s rights and to share this knowledge with members of their community and their relatives in the Philippines. He stated that all Filipinos have the duties to contribute to the recognition, respect and promotion of the rights of women.
