On 24 July 2014, the Philippine Embassy, together with the Filipino Community in Rome, celebrated the 150th Birth Anniversary of Apolinario Mabini and the 36thNational Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.

Vice Consul Candy Cypres commenced the celebration by reading excerpts of New York-based Filipino-American writer Luis Francia`s article on Mabini, A Light that Continues to Illuminate, written for the Philippine Daily Inquirer and translated by the Embassy in Filipino.

In his message, Ambassador Virgilio A. Reyes, Jr. recalled the life and works of Apolinario Mabini who was also the political adviser to President Aguinaldo and the first Foreign Secretary. He underlined that there could be no better example of overcoming poverty and disability to realize one’s potential than Apolinario Mabini.

Ambassador Reyes encouraged the members of the Filipino community to look on Apolinario Mabini as an inspiration and a shining example. Although Mabini was born poor, he worked hard and strived to be successful. He used his intellect to be able to contribute to his country’s independence. “He was born poor and died poor” citing Luis Francia.

“While working in Italy for your family, I urge you to remember our beloved country and to contribute to the progress and development of the Philippines”, said Ambassador Reyes.

The celebration was highlighted by the reading of Apolinario Mabini’s “True Decalogue” by Anginel Conchas Padilla, Cultural Assistant.

Ms. Evelyn Jusi of the Mabini Volunteers Association also shared her perspectives on Mabini, after whom their town is named, and how her fellow Batanguenos celebrate the hero in their town.

The celebration was also commemorated, through a week long exhibit of Mabini’s life, at the Consular section of the Embassy. The exhibit aimed to create awareness of Mabini’s life and achievements among Filipinos in Italy.
